Na categoria cinema em drama, a principal da cerimônia organizada pela Associação de Imprensa Estrangeira nos Estados Unidos são Meu pai, Mank, Nomadland, Os sete de Chicago e Promising young woman. Na de comédia ou musical, os indicados foram Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, Hamilton, Palm Springs, Music e The Prom.
Os serviços de streaming dominaram as indicações, sinalizando uma mudança de poder em Hollywood. O movimento foi acelerado durante a pandemia da COVID-19, quando grande parte do mundo ficou presa em casa e os cinemas permaneceram fechados.
A Netflix superou a concorrência, com 42 nomeações em todas as categorias de cinema e televisão, incluindo o filme Os sete de Chicago e a minissérie O gambito da rainha.
Depois de historicamente excluídas da categoria de diretor, as cineastas são maioria. Emerald Fennell (Promising young woman), Regina King (One night in Miami) e Chloé Zhao (Nomadland) vão disputer o prêmio com David Fincher (Mank) e Aaron Sorkin (Os sete de Chicago).
